OPIHI workshop at Bishop Museum:

The April 2007 OPIHI workshop organized by Joanna Philippoff was a big success. 25 educators from Oahu, Hawaii, and Maui joined GK-12 and Bishop Museum educators to take part in a workshop to learn about authentic scientific sampling techniques. The group participated in sessions on sampling strategies, invertebrate identification and data analysis. Following classroom activities that modeled sampling strategies and illustrated use of tools like transects and quadrats, the group visited Sand Island for a field sampling experience. This dynamic group spent ample time sharing ideas and knowledge with one another, including traditional Hawaiian names and uses for some of the limu (seaweed) seen in the intertidal field trip site.
Here's some of what participants had to say about the workshop:
"This was an excellent workshop. Probably the best one I've ever been to in Hawaii"
"It was amazing to see how much diversity there is in the water"
"Outstanding workshop- thank you, thank you, thank you!!"

Special thanks to Ken Longenecker and the Bishop Museum Education through Cultural and Historic Organizations project for co-sponsoring the OPIHI workshop. For more information on OPIHI, click here!
