I am a graduate student at the University of Hawaii at Manoa in the Department of Zoology. As a fellow in the Ecology, Evolution and Conservation Biology’s NSF GK-12 program, I am also coordinating a research-teaching partnership between the Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology (HIMB) and high school science teachers. Dr. Kanesa Duncan, from the UH College of Education, has made it possible for us to provide teachers with training as scientific divers. This will allow teachers to assist Dr. Steve Karl, a scientist at HIMB, in his field and lab-based research examining the fine-scale genetic structure of corals in Kaneohe Bay, Oahu. As part of the program, I will be helping teachers transfer their research experience into investigations that can be used in their high school science classrooms.
