ACCOMPLISHMENTS

Educational Accomplishments:
  • OPIHI has a documented record of improving the content and skills knowledge of participating students.
  • Writing samples conducted pre- and post- project at pilot schools showed significant increases in critical thinking and investigative skills.
  • Attitude questionnaires completed at the end of the project show an overwhelmingly positive response to participation in the project.
  • Student products and comments demonstrate a strong depth of knowledge of the topics the students investigated.
  • Following completion of the project, students were able to list a significantly higher amount of information about taxonomic groups they had researched, with fewer misconceptions and more sophisticated ideas than they had listed prior to participating in the project.

Scientific Accomplishments:
  • More than 600 species of algae, fish, and macro-invertebrates have been collected and identified at 17 sites around Oahu, Maui, and Molokai. Approximately one quarter of these species are found only in the intertidal, and these account for one half of the common species found during the surveys.
  • We have quantified native, endemic, and invasive species in Oahu’s intertidal. We found that 10% of algae, 13% of invertebrates, and 30% of fish were endemic species. The rate of endemism among the intertidal-only species was 20% overall. Our research also indicates that 9% of algae species and 11% of invertebrates are either non-native or cryptogenic.
  • Three years of quantitative data have been collected on common intertidal species from eight sites on Oahu, Maui, and Molokai.
