The following are examples of research projects sponsored by the GRC.

 

UH Faculty Grant Preparation Support Program 2000

The Globalization Research Center created Summer Research Stipends for 11 Univeristy of Hawaii faculty members to allow them to research a wide variety of globalization topics during Summer 2000. These research stipends supported the development of grant proposals to further their initial globalization research and led to a Spring and Fall 2001 Faculty Speaker series where stipend recepients present the results of their research to the University community. They are:

Sen Dou Chang, Geography, "Globalization and the Emergence of Shanghai and Beijing 'World Cities'."

Kwang Soo Cheong, Economics, "Distributional Aspects of the Asian Economic Crisis."

Elizabeth Davidson and Roberta Lamb, Decision Sciences, "Examining the Role of Socio-Technical Networks in Scientific Academia/Industrial Collaborations."

Professors Lamb and Davidson have just been awarded an NSF Research Grant worth $343,000 over 3 years. This award is the culmination of over 2 years of work, during which they obtained seed grants from CEEB, the Globalization Research Center, and the University Research Council.

Hagen Koo, Sociology, "Globalization, Industrial Relations, and Union Responses in Asia."

Jon Van Dyke and Mark Valencia, Law and East-West Center, "Indigenous Peoples' Ocean Rights, Claims, and Experiences."

Guobin Yang, Sociology, "From Wall Posters to BBS Postings: Cyberspace as a New Sphere for Public Discussion in China."

Christine Yano, Anthropology, "What's Up Kitty?: Consuming 'Kawaii' (Cute) in the Global Flows from a Japanese Company to its Export Markets."
