| Foreign Language Requirements
At the discretion of the graduate program and upon
approval by the Graduate Division, proficiency in one
or more foreign languages may be required of all students
in the program. Proficiency is defined as
the ability to read at a reasonable speed foreign research
materials in one's chosen discipline. Students demonstrate
proficiency by passing a written exam.
Any required language exam is administered by an agency
designated by the graduate program. All students within
a particular graduate program take exams administered
by the same agency. Possible agencies include the language
departments, the Center for Student Development, or
the faculty of the graduate program. Upon recommendation
by the graduate program, Graduate Division accepts GSFLT
scores earned at or near the end of a student's undergraduate
program of study, for the purpose of meeting the graduate
foreign language requirements.
The graduate chair reports exam results to the Graduate
Records Office as follows:
- Master's Plan A and Doctorate — via Form I for the first required language and
via Form II for the second required
language.
- Master's Plans B and C — via memos.
Language exam results are noted on the academic transcript.
There is no limit on the number of times that a student
may repeat the language exam.
A student may advance to candidacy only after passing
the exam for the first required foreign language.
