Nomination and Appointment

UHM faculty (instruction, research, administration and specialists) at Rank 3 or above and distinguished scholars from the community at large may be nominated to the graduate faculty. The graduate chair shall notify the Graduate Dean of new faculty hires and promotions.

Instructional and Research Faculty in Tenure Track Position
Upon appointment all UHM faculty at Rank 3 (I3 or R3) in departments with graduate programs automatically become associate members of the graduate faculty. Graduate programs may petition to allow them to chair a dissertation committee or to reappoint them as full members.

Upon appointment or promotion, all UHM faculty at Rank 4 (I4 or R4) or above in departments with graduate programs automatically become full members of the graduate faculty.

All Other Faculty
To nominate other faculty to the graduate faculty, the graduate chair shall send to the Graduate Dean a memo and a current curriculum vitae of the nominee. The memo should indicate the type (regular, cooperating, or affiliate) and the level (full or associate) of appointment being requested and contain a statement certifying that the nomination has the approval of the majority of the regular faculty in the graduate program. A nominee must possess the appropriate terminal degree.

Multiple Appointments

A faculty may be appointed to more than one graduate faculty. However, no appointment may be at a level higher than the faculty's appointment in his or her home graduate program.
