Appointment Review

Graduate programs nominate their faculty for continued appointment as part of the program review process. The Graduate Council reviews the nominations and the Graduate Division makes the final decision. Faculty members who have not been nominated for continued appointment or whose nominations have not been approved lose their graduate faculty status.

In the case of a full member of the graduate faculty who has not been recently productive, it is possible for either the graduate program or the Graduate Council to recommend that the faculty member be reappointed to the associate level. To be reinstated to full membership, a faculty member must meet the following standard of the Graduate Senate: "It is the responsibility of the faculty member to remain current in her or his field; to be active in scholarship as evidenced by two or more refereed/juried publications or other outlets for artistic/creative activities as appropriate to the field (in fields where books are the standard form of shared scholarship, significant progress must be demonstrated); and to participate in teaching and guiding graduate students as demonstrated by participating in two or more of the following activities; teaching graduate level courses, serving on graduate student committees; providing financial support for graduate students; serving on policy, examination, or program committees of a graduate faculty as well as any additional criteria established by their respective graduate programs."

Reappointment as an associate member requires a past record of scholarship as evidenced by appropriate publications or outlets for artistic/creative activities, and continued participation in graduate education.

The Graduate Council follows the procedures listed below in undertaking reviews of graduate faculty:

  1. The Graduate Division appoints a committee and a convener to conduct the initial review of the documents for each graduate program under review . Depending on the size of the program, the committee will consist of two to three council members who are in areas similar to but outside of that of the program under review.
  2. The committee will contact the chair of the graduate program under review for clarification of the program's criteria for continuation on the graduate faculty at the full and associate levels. (Program criteria are above and beyond the minimum standards set by the Graduate Senate).
  3. The committee will review all CVs to ensure that the faculty nominees meet the appropriate minimum standards. If the committee has concerns or questions regarding a specific nominee, it will contact the chair of the graduate program for additional information.
  4. The committee will make its recommendation to the full Graduate Council. Possible recommendations are:
    a. continuation of the current appointment;
    b. reappointment to a lower level (for those holding full appointments); or
    c. removal from the graduate faculty.
  5. The Council will vote on the committee's recommendations and forward its recommendation to the Graduate Dean.
  6. The Graduate Dean is responsible for reappointing faculty for an additional term, which may last up to seven years or until the next program review.
  7. A faculty member who is not recommended by his or her graduate program to be continued on the graduate faculty, may appeal this decision to the chair of the graduate program. If the faculty member is dissatisfied with the outcome of the appeal, he or she may further appeal the case to the Graduate Dean.
  8. A faculty member not recommended by the Graduate Council and not appointed by the Graduate Dean may appeal this decision to the Graduate Dean. If the faculty member is not satisfied with the outcome of the appeal, he or she may further appeal the case to the Graduate Dean.
