Commencement
Candidates for advanced degrees who file for graduation and who wish to participate in commencement must register on-line. Information about participation, the ceremony, regalia, diplomas and announcements is also posted online.
Proper Regalia
All master's candidates who attend the ceremony need to wear
caps, gowns and hoods. Doctoral candidates need to wear caps
and gowns but not hoods. The hoods will be placed individually
on each doctoral degree recipient.
Intended candidates purchase the proper regalia from the
Bookstore, Customer Service Counter. Doctoral candidates who
intend to enter academic careers might well consider an investment
in a green and white UH doctoral gown, which has been authorized
by the Board of Regents.
Personalized graduation announcements will also be available
for purchase at the Bookstore. There is a special 10 percent
discount for orders placed on or before a specified date.
Commencement Card
All intended graduates who participate in the commencement
ceremony need to fill out a commencement card and bring the
card to the ceremony. Graduates will present their cards to
the Graduate Division personnel on stage.
- Master's candidates — Please obtain your 3"
x 5" commencement card from the Bookstore.
- Doctoral candidates — Please use the 5" x 8"
commencement card that will be mailed to you by the Graduate
Division. Do not use the commencement cards from the Bookstore.
Students whose names are frequently mispronounced should
call the Graduate Records Office at Tel. 956-8950 during the
two-week period prior to commencement, to ensure that their
names will be pronounced correctly at the ceremony.
Selection of a Sponsor (doctoral candidates only)
Doctoral candidates who wish to participate in the commencement
need to select a sponsor who will place the hood on the degree
recipient. The sponsor is normally the chairperson of the
candidate's doctoral committee. In the event that the chairperson
is unavailable, any other member of the committee may serve
as the sponsor. Please make sure that your sponsor is available
to attend the commencement ceremony.
