Conflict Resolution

This section provides information on available campus resources for conflict resolution. Students who are in immediate danger or who feel physically threatened due to any situation of conflict should contact the Campus Security. In the event of a dispute with a faculty, students must make a good-faith effort at informal conflict resolution using the resources listed below, before filing a formal academic grievance by following the grievance procedure.

Record Keeping and Confidentiality

Students are advised to keep accurate and detailed records of situations from which conflicts have arisen. Record facts such as date, time, place, description, and witnesses (if any) of the situation. Students should also chronicle the steps taken to resolve the conflict, and the responses received.

When confidentiality is an issue, students are advised to inquire about confidentiality before consulting with anyone for advice or guidance. In the event where a formal grievance is filed, all parties involved in the dispute will be notified. University policy as well as state and federal law prohibit retaliation against any person because s/he has filed a discrimination complaint or served as a witness in the complaint investigation.

Available Campus Resources

Office of Student Affairs — This office resolves issues relating to student conduct and grades. The UHM Academic Grievance Procedure governs grievance involving grades, which may be changed only by course instructors and the academic grievance committee.

Equal Employment Opportunity / Affirmative Action (EEO/AA) Office — UH is an EEO/AA institution committed to providing a community free of discrimination, intimidation, harassment or violence. It is also committed to promoting diversity and accommodating persons with disability. For issues dealing with discrimination or civil rights violation, contact the Office of the Civil Rights Counselor. For issues dealing with sexual harassment or assault, contact the Office of the Gender Equity Counselor.

UHM Ombuds Office — The Ombuds Office provides confidential conflict resolution services to faculty, staff and students on any issue arising at UHM. The office also makes referrals to other campus resources as appropriate.

UH Alternative Dispute Resolution Program (UH-ADR) aka UH Mediation Services — UH-ADR provides conflict prevention, management and resolution to the entire UH community. The process is informal, private and voluntary. Students are strongly recommended to contact UH-ADR for assistance with mediation, before filing a formal grievance.

Graduate Student Organization (GSO) — The GSO Executive Committee supports graduate students during both the informal and formal stages of conflict resolution.

Graduate Division — During the informal stage of conflict resolution, the Graduate Dean and the Assistant Graduate Dean provide counseling and guidance, and assist with informal resolution of the conflict. However, once a formal grievance is filed, the Graduate Division becomes the official arbitrator and must remain impartial to all parties involved in the conflict.
