Patent

To be eligible for patent protection under U.S. law, an inventor must file a patent application to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office within one year after the invention has been published, or publicly used or sold. Most countries require that the patent application be filed before any public disclosure.

For sponsored research contracts and grants, both federal and private, the terms concerning intellectual property usually require diligent disclosure and protection of inventions.
