| General Information |
Time Allowed / Seven-Year Rule
In general, graduate students at UHM need to complete all degree
requirements within seven years after admission to their programs.
An approved leave of absence is not counted in the seven years.
Extension of the time allowed may be granted to a master's
Plan A or doctoral student, if at the end of year seven, the student
has completed all degree requirements except the thesis or dissertation.
Master's Plan B/C students are required to complete all degree requirements
within seven years.
Residence Requirements
Residence is defined as registration. Transfer credits may not be
used to reduce UHM residence requirements. For part-time students,
each eight credits completed as a degree-seeking graduate student
will be equivalent to one full-time semester of residence.

Foreign Language Requirements
At the discretion of the graduate program and upon approval by the
Graduate Division, proficiency in one or more foreign languages
may be required of all students in the program. Proficiency is defined as the
ability to read at a reasonable speed foreign research materials
in one's chosen discipline. Students demonstrate proficiency by
passing a written exam. |

| Master's Plan A |
All graduate students at UHM need to meet degree requirements set
by the Graduate Division and their graduate programs. Below is an
overview of general Graduate Division requirements for the master's
program — Plan A.

A minimum of 30 credits is required,
including at least 18 credits of course work and between six
to 12 credits of Thesis 700.
The thesis/research credit requirements are set uniformly
for each graduate program by the program's faculty.
Credits taken under the Credit/No-Credit option (except 699)
while under Plan C are not applicable toward degree requirements
for Plan A. |

The total number of 699 and 700

thesis research, 699 credits equal to the difference may be
applied. |
| Graduate Seminar |
A minimum of one graduate seminar
in the student's graduate program or in a related program
is required. |
| General Exam |
At the discretion of the graduate
program, a general exam may be required. If required, all
students in Plan A shall take the exam. |
| Thesis |
The thesis will be a scholarly contribution
to knowledge and present research conducted by the student
under the supervision of the thesis committee chair. The subject
of a thesis must be approved by the student's committee.
The student must be the sole author of the manuscript, co-authored
thesis is not permitted.
The thesis may not have been published previously in its
entirety. With the approval of the graduate program and the
committee chair, a student may include previously published
material in the thesis. |
| Final Exam/Defense |
At the discretion of the graduate program,
a final exam may be required. It is primarily a defense of
the thesis and may cover related subjects as well. The exam
is conducted by the candidate's entire thesis committee and
lasts for a minimum of one hour.
The candidate defends the thesis by demonstrating to the
thesis committee satisfactory command of all aspects of the
work presented.
A majority of the committee, including the chair, must approve
of the defense in order for the student to pass. |

|

It may be an examination, a special course, a seminar presentation,
a paper, a performance, or some other capstone experience.
When a paper or project is required, it is typically offered
as part of a 695 course. |
| Final Exam |

program, a final exam may be required. If required, all students
in the Plan B shall take the exam. |

required. The student shall demonstrate competence by exam
and must meet the minimum residence requirements. |
| Transferring from Plan A or B to Plan C |
A student on academic probation
may not transfer from Plan A or B to Plan C. |
| General Exam |
A general exam is required.
After the student passes the exam, a program committee is
nominated and appointed. Chaired by the student's program
adviser, the committee will guide the student through the
rest of the recommended program of study. |
| Program of Study |
After the student passes the general exam,
the graduate chair shall submit to the Graduate Records Office
a copy of the recommended program of study for the student
based on the exam results. |
| Final Exam |
A final exam is required to determine the
student's level of comprehension and achievement in the chosen
discipline at the master's level. |

| Master of Fine Arts (MFA) |
|
All graduate students at UHM need to meet degree requirements set
by the Graduate Division and their graduate programs. Below is an
overview of general Graduate Division requirements for the MFA program.

Generally, a minimum of 60 credits is required.
The MFA may be offered under either Plan
A (thesis) or Plan B (non-thesis). |

A minimum of 30 credits must be for courses
at the 600 level and above. All other courses must be at the
300 level and above. |
| Culminating Experience |
In general, a major performance, project or
exhibition is required near the completion of the degree program. |

| Doctorate |
|
All graduate students at UHM need to meet degree requirements set
by the Graduate Division and their graduate programs. Below is an
overview of general Graduate Division degree requirements for the
doctoral program. Graduate programs often have additional requirements,
contact the program for details.

| Course Work |
At the discretion of the graduate program,
course work may be required or recommended. |
| Qualifying Exam |
At the discretion of the graduate program,
a qualifying exam may be required. If required, all students
in the program must take the exam. |
| Comprehensive Exam |
The comprehensive exam is required. Its purpose
is to ascertain the student's comprehension of knowledge fundamental
to the chosen major field of study and minor fields as may
be required.
The exam may be either oral or oral and written. It is conducted
by the faculty of the graduate program or a sub-committee
thereof. It is given only after the student has acquired sufficient
preparation as determined by the faculty of the graduate program,
and has fulfilled the foreign language requirements (if required).
A majority of the committee must vote "pass" in
order for the student to pass. A student who fails the final
exam may repeat it once. A student who fails any portion of
the comprehensive exam twice will be dismissed from both the
graduate program and the Graduate Division, unless recommended
otherwise by the graduate chair. |
| All-But-Dissertation (ABD) Certificates |
Upon recommendation by the graduate chair on Student Progress
Form II, a student who passes the comprehensive exam may receive
an All-But-Dissertation certificate, which indicates that
all requirements for the doctorate have been completed except
the dissertation. |
| Dissertation |
The dissertation will be a scholarly contribution
to knowledge and present research conducted by the student
under the supervision of the dissertation committee chair.
The subject of a dissertation must be approved by the student's
committee.
The student must be the sole author of the manuscript, co-authored
dissertation is not permitted. In addition, the dissertation
should exhibit originality in the sense that it does not duplicate
someone else's work.

program and the Graduate Division (sequential degrees only)
- Course work for both degrees are completed within the
time allowed. See Seven-Year Rule.
