The Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures (EALL)
at the University of Hawai'i at Mānoa (UHM) is the largest
of its kind in the United States. Unparalleled in its breadth
and depth, the department's curriculum includes a variety
of courses in Chinese, Japanese and Korean. The department's
graduate program is designed primarily to provide students
with advanced professional training in language (including
language history, structure, pedagogy, and sociolinguistics),
or literature (including literary history and criticism).
The department offers an MA program in the fields of Chinese
language and Chinese literature. The program is designed to
provide students with advanced professional training in the
history and structure or in the literature of Chinese. The
program is also intended to provide professional training
and practical teaching experience for future teachers of Chinese.
The PhD program is available with concentrations in Chinese
linguistics and literature and comparative studies exploring
the relations of a language and literature of East Asia. The
program is designed to produce scholars with high-level competence
in the languages and literatures of East Asia.
