Program Overview

The interdisciplinary Cell and Molecular Biology (CMB) Program at the University of Hawai'i at Mānoa (UHM) brings together faculty with expertise in biochemistry, cell biology, cell signaling, developmental biology, genetics, immunology, retrovirology, matrix pathobiology, neurobiology/neurophysiology, and reproduction for collaborative research and teaching activities.

Graduate programs leading to the MS and the PhD are available. The MS program is available in Plan A (thesis) or Plan B (non-thesis). The completion of Plan A serves as a qualifying exam for students who intend to continue on to the PhD program in CMB. It may also serve as a terminal degree for those who wish to pursue careers as research technicians, either in the public or private sector. Plan B is usually a terminal degree, appropriate for professionals in medical technology, government, and related fields who wish to obtain broad training in modern genetics to advance their credentials in their chosen fields.

The PhD program is intended to prepare students for careers in academia, in research institutes, and in the ever-expanding areas of biotechnology in the private sector. PhD students receive fellowships during their first year of study. Qualified students may receive research and/or teaching assistantships during the subsequent years of study.
