Hawaii provides an opportunity to study and practice conflict
resolution in a multi-cultural setting. The population of
one million people identify themselves with over a dozen distinct
ethnic groups. Dispute resolution scholarship and practice
encounter cultural differences constantly.
The Program on Conflict Resolution (PCR) at the University
of Hawai'i at Mānoa (UHM) is an interdisciplinary graduate
certificate program supported by the Schools of Law and Education;
the Departments of Speech, Political Science, Planning and
Sociology; and the Shidler College of Business.
Faculty members participating in the program offer courses
and conduct research in dispute resolution. Many faculty members
also practice in areas such as divorce mediation; public policy
facilitation; United Nations negotiations; and conflict resolution
in schools, government, family business, social service agencies,
and university settings.
Classified UHM graduate students may specialize in dispute
resolution. The courses, practice and scholarship that comprise
the specialty are individually designed for each student by
the PCR faculty and the faculty in the student's degree program.
Students in the program have the opportunity to become trained
and experienced practitioners. They may participate in dispute
resolution training provided by PCR for the community, work
closely in an apprenticeship role with one or more faculty
practitioners, and join in the community mediation program.
Students receive some academic credit for this work.
