Program Overview

Information and computer science is the study of the description and representation of information, as well as the theory, design, analysis, implementation, and application of algorithmic processes that transform information.

The Department of Information and Computer Sciences at the University of Hawai'i at Mānoa (UHM) offers graduate programs leading to the MS and the PhD in computer science. The MS program is intended for students planning either to specialize in computer science or to apply computer science to another field. The department offers two PhD programs — one designed for applicants entering with undergraduate degrees, and one for applicants who have already completed the MS program at UHM or equivalent course work elsewhere.

Students majoring in computer science learn to use computer systems, a valuable skill that can be applied to other disciplines. Students also learn the scientific principles and technology required to develop new computer systems and applications. The department's curriculum covers all major areas of computer science, with special emphasis on human-computer interaction, software engineering and computer networks — areas uniquely suited to Hawai'i's role as a multi-cultural and geographical center of the Pacific.

Graduates have secured programming, systems analysis, and other technical positions in industry, business, and government; as well as teaching and research positions in academia. Some have applied their computer skills to other careers.
