Program Overview

The University of Hawai'i at Mānoa (UHM) offers an Interdisciplinary Certificate in Disability and Diversity Studies. Co-sponsored by the Center on Disability Studies (CDS) and the Department of Educational Foundations, the program provides an interdisciplinary approach to the study of disability and diversity issues from a cultural and historical context. Students enrolled in the program examine ideas related to disability in all forms of cultural representations throughout history. They investigate the policies and practices of all societies to understand the social, rather than the physical or psychological, determinants of the experience of disability for the disabled individuals and their families.

Serving as an area of specialization or cognate in disability studies, the certificate complements existing graduate programs in diverse disciplines such as education, social work, psychology, public health, nursing, law, medicine, and political science. Students participate in interdisciplinary experiences whereby they acquire leadership skills in joint planning, decision making and goal setting.
