Admissions Requirements

1) Graduate Division admissions standard and documentation requirements, and
2) program specific admissions criteria and documentation requirements
    (see below).

 
  • undergraduate degree leading to initial teaching licensure or a suitable undergraduate degree if in a teaching position
  • graduate program application form
  • graduate program supplemental information form (download form)
  • statement of objectives (download form)
  • three letters of recommendation
  • official TOEFL scores — 500/173/61 or above (Required of most non-native speakers of English. Click here for information on exemptions.)
 

Submission of Program Specific Documentation Requirements
With the exception of TOEFL and GRE scores, all program specific documentation requirements should be sent directly to the graduate program.

If required, official TOEFL and GRE scores should be sent to the Graduate Admissions Office. Please note that GRE scores may be required by the graduate program (see above) or by the Graduate Division (more info.)

 
 
Program Overview
 

The Department of Curriculum Studies at the University of Hawai'i at Mānoa (UHM) offers graduate studies leading to the MEd in curriculum studies. It is designed to serve licensed teachers who wish to learn about and inquire into the areas of preschool/primary, elementary, middle level or secondary education. The program prepares teachers to fill a variety of teaching and resource roles at an advanced level. However, it does not lead to licensure to teach.

The program is designed to help teachers with the following:

  • to become better informed about the developmental and educational needs of children and adolescents from various types of communities;
  • to gain skills in diagnostic and evaluation procedures and in developing curriculum to meet individual and group needs;
  • to become more versatile in their employment of teaching strategies;
  • to become capable of providing leadership in a classroom, school, or school system;
  • to become more knowledgeable about issues, trends, and research in their fields;
  • to become better informed about new technology and its applications; and
  • to become more reflective in their professional practice.

Students may choose from the following areas of concentration:

  1. Pre-School / Primary
  2. Elementary, specializations in:
    • art education
    • health education
    • language arts / literacy
    • mathematics education
    • multicultural education
    • physical education
    • science education
    • social studies
  3. Middle Level
  4. Secondary, specializations in:
    • art education
    • careers, technology and technical education
    • health education
    • language arts / literacy
    • mathematics education
    • multicultural education
    • physical education
    • science education
    • social studies

Degree Requirements
 

All graduate students at UHM need to meet degree requirements set by the Graduate Division and their graduate programs. For general Graduate Division requirements, see Degree Requirements. Below is an overview of the degree requirements for this graduate program.

 

Students may select either Plan A (thesis) or Plan B (non-thesis).

  • Plan A requires 30 credits (including six credits of thesis research), a written thesis and defense of the thesis.
  • Plan B requires 30 credits and a culminating project.
