Program Overview

Educational foundations is a broadly conceived field whose concepts and theory are drawn from academic disciplines such as anthropology, economics, history, philosophy, political science, religion, and sociology; areas of study found within the broad frame of comparative, international, global, environmental, and multicultural concerns; educational policy studies; and efforts toward school renewal and community organization.

The Department of Educational Foundations at the University of Hawai'i at Mānoa (UHM) offers graduate programs leading to the MEd in educational foundations and the PhD in education (specialization educational foundations). Students enrolled in the MEd program may focus on history of education, philosophy of education, social foundations of education, or comparative/international education.

The department's faculty members are committed to the use of interdisciplinary perspectives in understanding and assessing educational controversies and issues, contributing to educational change and school renewal, and advancing theoretical understanding. The multiple perspectives embraced in educational foundations stand in opposition to the idea that a single intellectual and moral outlook and its associated behavior are compatible with education and schooling in a democracy.

Through a study of educational theory and practice using the fields of history, philosophy, and the social sciences, graduates are expected to be able to analyze alternatives in educational thought, policy, and practice related to the social and moral problems faced by schools and other educational agencies at the state, national, and international levels.

The majority of students who pursue a degree in educational foundations plan to become or are already employed in school, college, or university teaching; in improvement programs in the schools; in departments of education; and in governmental or private agencies. Graduates who already have a basic teaching certificate are eligible for State of Hawai'i certification at the professional level.

Educational Leadership in the Asia/Pacific Region (EdLeads)
EdLeads is a 30-credit hour, cohort-based program designed to meet the needs of working teachers and school administrators who wish to obtain an MEd in educational foundations. The program emphasizes issues of cultural and multicultural awareness and diversity in a comparative and international context. It also embraces the idea of professional leadership for teachers and administrators.

The program may be completed in 14 months without career interruption, through a combination of online work and on-campus classes taken over two consecutive summer sessions that last five weeks each.
