Program Overview

Educational technology deals with the complex and integrated process of the systemic application of technology in all aspects of human learning. The Department of Educational Technology at the University of Hawai'i at Mānoa (UHM) offers a graduate program leading to the MEd in educational technology. The curriculum merges the development of practical knowledge and skills with a solid understanding of theoretical and research basics. Emphasis is not placed on electronic or mechanical devices, but on the application of such devices to plan, design, implement and evaluate different strategies for creating an effective and efficient learning environment.

The department offers an online version of the MEd program for busy professionals and international students who are unable to attend courses at the UHM campus, due to either time or distance constraints. Approximately 80 percent of the course work is completed online, while the remaining 20 percent is facilitated by face-to-face (F2F) sessions.

Graduates of the program pursue careers in formal educational settings, as well as in companies and agencies that engage in training for employees or clients.

Degree Requirements

All graduate students at UHM need to meet degree requirements set by the Graduate Division and their graduate programs. For general Graduate Division requirements, see Degree Requirements. Below is an overview of the degree requirements for this graduate program.

Students may select either Plan A (thesis) or Plan B (non-thesis).

  • Plan A requires 36 credits (including six credits of thesis research), a written thesis and defense of the thesis.
  • Plan B requires 36 credits and a culminating project.
  • Both plans require a final oral exam and the publication of an electronic portfolio.
