In today's highly competitive business environment, the roles
and responsibilities of human resource professionals have
become increasingly critical for corporate success. Human
resource management (HRM) professionals must understand human
resource issues and management trends in a competitive global
economy as well as a broad spectrum of state and federal employment
legislation.
The Shidler College of Business at the University
of Hawai'i at Mānoa (UHM) offers a graduate program leading
to the master of human resource management. The program enhances
the skills of those already working in the field of HRM as
well as those interested in pursuing a career in this field.
The program's accelerated executive format is especially geared
toward working professionals, specifically customized to equip
HR managers with the tools to meet effectively the challenges
of an ever-changing business climate. The curriculum provides
advanced education in staffing, training, compensation, benefits,
career development, health and safety, and labor relations.
A firm foundation in employment law is provided, in order
to assist HR managers in dealing with the increasing legal
and regulatory requirements of their field.
The program uses a cohort style of learning, where each class
goes through the entire program together. This cohort structure
provides excellent networking for shared experiences and a
collaborative learning environment. Individual students may
join the cohort for selected courses of study on a space-available
basis.
The Shidler College of Business is ranked in the top 25 among the nation's best graduate
schools for international business by U.S. News & World
Report. It is the only school in Hawai'i accredited by the
Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB
International) and is a member of the Graduate Management
Admissions Council. Many of Hawai'i's top business leaders
are graduates of the college.
Graduate students have access to personal computers in the college's
three microcomputer labs. An extensive library of software
for business applications and several research centers are
also available. The UHM library offers a wealth of information
to the students. The Asian Collection in Hamilton Library
has a heavy concentration of statistical materials related
to South and Southeast Asia. Business information on other
Asian countries is also available in the collection. More
than 175 databases can be searched for references.
