Program Overview

The Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures (EALL) at the University of Hawai'i at Mānoa (UHM) is the largest of its kind in the United States. Unparalleled in its breadth and depth, the department's curriculum includes a variety of courses in Chinese, Japanese and Korean. The Korean Division in the Department of EALL offers graduate programs leading to the MA and the PhD.

The MA program is available with tracks in language and linguistics, literature, and Korean for Professions. Aimed at cultivating language teachers, the language and linguistics track emphasizes linguistic structure and language pedagogy. The literature track prepares students for careers in translation, writing and college teaching; students who opt for this track study different genres of literature as well as literary history and criticism. The track "Korean for Professions" is the first of its kind in the U.S., and targets those who plan to pursue careers as Korean specialists in either the public or private sector, or who aspire to become scholars in a Korea-related discipline that requires professional levels in Korean language and culture.

The PhD program is available with concentrations in Korean linguistics and literature and comparative studies exploring the relations of a language and literature of East Asia. The program is designed to produce scholars with high-level competence in the languages and literatures of East Asia.

Financial Support
All applications for Fall admission that are complete by the specified application deadlines will be considered for tuition awards.

The MA and PhD programs in Korean participate in the Western Regional Graduate Program administered by the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education (WICHE). The program enables legal residents of WICHE member states to enroll in selected out-of-state professional or graduate programs at reduced tuition rates. For more information, see Financial Matters < WICHE Program.
