At
the University of Hawai'i at Mānoa (UHM), the specialization
in marine biology is an interdisciplinary program that brings
together faculty members from participating graduate programs
(See Admissions Requirements) to
provide the training students need to contribute effectively
to this field. The program focuses on recent advances in the
understanding of marine systems at the ecological, organismic,
and cellular-molecular levels. Course work, faculty expertise
and research opportunities are available in a wide range of
specialties, including aquaculture, behavior, biosystematics,
botany, cognition, ecology, genetics, microbiology, molecular
biology, biological oceanography, fisheries, coral reef biology
and zoology.
Students have access to a university-wide centralized
computer database, a biotechnology center, and excellent library
facilities. Students conduct research in the research laboratories
of the graduate faculty, such as the Békésy
Laboratory at the Pacific Biomedical Research Center (PBRC),
the St. John Laboratory of Botanical Sciences, and other laboratories
located in Edmonson Hall, Snyder Hall and the Marine Science
Building. Off-campus laboratories include the Hawai'i Institute
of Marine Biology (located on Coconut Island in Kaneohe Bay)
and PBRC's Kewalo Laboratory.
Participating
faculty members in marine biology conduct research in fields
including DNA sequencing using PCR technology; video and acoustic
recording for ecological and behavioral studies of coral reef
and planktonic organisms; transmission and scanning electron,
ultraviolet, and light microscopy; electrophoretic analysis;
flow cytometry; and radioisotope tracer studies.

In addition to completing the degree requirements for their
chosen graduate program, students are required to take supplemental
courses on topics in marine biology, complete an original
research project and present the project.
Courses
Students who specialize in marine biology take courses from
departments that participate in the program. To view a listing
of courses offered, visit www.catalog.hawaii.edu/courses/description-index.htm.
