Overview |
| |
|
Meteorology is the study of phenomena in the Earth's atmosphere.
The study of meteorology at the University of Hawai'i at Mānoa (UHM) has a unique focus on tropical meteorology. Comprising
about 50 percent of Earth's surface, the tropics exert great
influences on the global climate.
The
Department of Meteorology offers programs leading to the MS
and the PhD. Through courses in dynamic, synoptic and physical
meteorology, students develop a strong foundation in tropical
meteorology. Many students in the graduate programs pursue
thesis or dissertation research in tropical meteorology. A
number of students receive research funding support from the
National Weather Service, whose Honolulu Weather Forecast
Office is housed in the same building as the department.
Graduates find employment opportunities both in academia
and in governmental agencies, where they teach or conduct
research in the atmospheric sciences.

All
graduate students at UHM need to meet degree requirements
set by the Graduate Division and their graduate programs.
For general Graduate Division requirements, see Degree
Requirements. Below is an overview of the degree requirements
for this graduate program. |

|
MS Degree Requirements
The MS program is available only in Plan A (thesis). It requires
30 credits (including six credits of thesis research), a written
thesis and defense of the thesis.
PhD Degree Requirements
The PhD program requires the following:
- 24 credits of graduate course work in dynamic, synoptic,
physical and tropical meteorology*,
- comprehensive exam (written and oral),
- dissertation,
- final oral exam / defense of dissertation.
* At least 15 of these credits must be completed at UHM.
Students must earn a grade of B or higher for all required
meteorology courses. With the consent of the academic adviser,
students may take courses in related disciplines, including
engineering, information and computer sciences, geography,
mathematics, oceanography and physics.
