  • undergraduate degree in one of the classical engineering disciplines that provides an adequate background in mathematics, physics and mechanics*
  • graduate program supplemental information form (download form)
  • statement of objectives (download form)
  • official GRE General Test scores (recommended)
  • official TOEFL scores — 560/220/83 or above (Required of most non-native speakers of English. Click here for information on exemptions.)

* Applicants with an undergraduate degree in mathematics, physics or other science may be admitted. They must make up course deficiencies before they may be advanced to candidacy.

PhD Program

  • graduate degree (equivalent to the master's level at UHM) in one of the classical engineering disciplines that provides an adequate background in mathematics, physics and mechanics*
  • graduate program supplemental information form (download form)
  • statement of objectives (download form)
  • official GRE General Test scores
  • official TOEFL scores — 560/220/83 or above (Required of most non-native speakers of English. Click here for information on exemptions.)

* Exceptional appllicants with only an undergraduate degree in engineering may petition for direct admission to the PhD program.

Program Overview

Hawaii's unique location, climate and marine-oriented activities make the University of Hawai'i at Mānoa (UHM) an ideal place for education and research in ocean and resources engineering. The Department of Ocean and Resources Engineering (ORE) offers graduate programs leading to the MS and the PhD. The MS program prepares students for a professional career in advanced ocean science and technology. Students in the PhD program develop the ability to conduct original research and acquire the experience of publishing in refereed journals. Each program of study is individually tailored to fit the student's background and interest. The educational and research programs in the department have a good balance between numerical and laboratory modeling as well as field observation.

Educational and research emphasis is placed on coastal engineering, ocean resources engineering, and offshore engineering. These areas are of vital importance to the State of Hawai'i, the nation, and the world.

Coastal engineering deals with coastal and harbor problems, sediment transport, nearshore environmental engineering, and coastal flood hazards.

Ocean resources engineering is concerned with the engineering systems to develop the energy, mineral, and living resources of the oceans, the use of the ocean for waste disposal, and the environmental and economic aspects of these activities.

Offshore Engineering is concerned with structures and systems used in the deeper parts of the ocean, including the continental shelf. It includes hydrodynamics of fluid-body interaction, seakeeping and dynamic responses of ships and platforms, and hydroelasticity of very large floating structures, such as floating airports.

Career opportunities for graduates in ocean and resources engineering exist in several areas. A little more than half of the graduates during the last decade found positions in private industry — working for oil companies, consulting and environmental service firms, classification societies, and construction firms. About 20 percent of the graduates found employment with federal agencies such as the Army Corps of Engineers, Navy Civil Engineer Corps, and Pacific Missile Range Facility. Five percent work for the State of Hawai'i and the University of Hawai'i. About 10 percent of the MS graduates furthered their studies in PhD programs at U.S. universities. Graduates of non-U.S. origins who returned to their home countries work mostly for governmental agencies and research institutes.

Degree Requirements
