Program Overview

Physiology is the study of the functions and activities of life or of living matter and of the physical and chemical phenomena involved. The Department of Anatomy, Biochemistry and Physiology at the University of Hawai'i at Mānoa (UHM) offers graduate programs leading to the MS Plan A (thesis), MS Plan B (non-thesis) and the PhD.

The MS Plan A and PhD programs require a combination of course work and original research, the latter forming the basis of the student's thesis or dissertation. Both degrees may serve as an introduction to a research career. The MS Plan B prepares students for teaching careers at the high school, community college, or university level. It may also be a prelude to a medical or dental education. Students may elect to work concurrently toward an MD or a PhD.

Advanced degrees in physiology prepare students for teaching careers in academia, as well as for research careers in academia, government laboratories, and large pharmaceutical companies. Some physiology graduates find employment in sports-training activities or in health and fitness programs in hospitals or private businesses. The MS concentration in exercise physiology is available for those interested in pursuing careers in such fields. In addition, the department offers many courses for students seeking health-related careers, such as dental hygiene, dentistry, medical technology, medicine, nursing, nutrition, physical therapy, public health, and the social sciences.

Opportunities for research exist in the areas of hyperbaric and diving physiology; cardiovascular, respiratory, and environmental physiology; endocrinology; neurophysiology; physiological anthropology; thermoregulation; and sports medicine and rehabilitation.
