Program Overview

The Population Studies Program at the University of Hawai'i at Mānoa (UHM) and the Population and Health Studies Program, East-West Center (EWC) offer the interdisciplinary program leading to the graduate certificate in population studies.

The certificate program explores the relationships between population processes and social, political, environmental and economic change in the contemporary world. In specific, the program examines fertility, mortality, migration, population growth and aging from a multi-disciplinary perspective and places an emphasis on policy-oriented study and research. The program's curriculum consists of a core of basic information and seven overlapping key areas, including 1) aging, 2) demographic methods, 3) health and development, 4) marriage, family and fertility, 5) population and economics, 6) population and environment, and 7) social mobility and spatial dynamics.

The program's curriculum draws on the strength of its interdisciplinary faculty from anthropology, communication, economics, geography, political science, public health, sociology, and urban planning. Given the geographical location of UHM and the expertise of its faculty, the program focuses on policies and issues of contemporary importance in the Asia-Pacific region.
