Program Overview

The Department of Special Education at the University of Hawai'i at Mānoa (UHM) offers a post-baccalaureate certificate program in special education (PBSPED). The program is geared towards those with a bachelor's degree in any field who desire to receive teaching licensure in the field of special education. The program offers two tracks:

  • Mild/Moderate Disabilites — This track is for those who desire to teach students with high incidence disabilities (e.g., learning disabilities, ADHD, mild/moderate mental retardation or emotional disturbance).
  • Severe Disabilities/Autism — This track is for those who desire to teach students with low incidence disabilities (e.g., severe mental retardation, autism, multiple impairments).

With the exception of field work, all courses for the program are held in the evening. Students complete the majority of course work in one year, then pursue either a year-long internship or one semester of student teaching. Students may complete the program with a cohort or on their own schedule. They may teach in a special education setting while enrolled in the program.

Upon successful completion of the PBSPED and upon meeting the State of Hawai'i Department of Education PRAXIS requirements, students can apply for licensure in special education.
