INSTRUCTIONAL COMPONENT
Constructing: Hand build component of map making is
as follows:
§
Sand
board (outside of classroom)
§
Prime
board (one side only)
§
Trace
map on to board with carbon paper or create your own carbon. Trace the following:
o
Outline
of land mass and place an ‘X’ at the summit and ‘x’ s
to record length of rift
o
Major
rivers and lakes
o
Surrounding
countries, states or islands if they fit into the overall composition
§
Build
map from volcanic peaks (mountain) to ocean. Check elevation chart and refer to your Xeroxed map for the
following:
o
Deserts
o
Plains
o
Valleys
o
Oceans
o
Volcanic
peaks or mountains
o
Reefs
o
Canyons
o
Major
lakes/rivers
§
Let
dry
§
Gesso
entire surface thoroughly/sides (double check for any pukas’)
§
Any
left over celluclay should be stored in a sealed plastic bag and
refrigerated. Please use as soon
as possible (1-2 weeks in this climate)
§
Let
dry and gesso entire surface plus edges.
§
If
mold appears on surface of map, paint mold with solution of Clorox mixed with
water.
