Dear Mom and Dad,

I wanted to tell you a little about Kea`au.

Kea`au is known for its Hala tree.  It grows in dry areas.  The prop roots are important to the tree because they support the leaves and fruits at the end of a branch.  This tree grows more then twenty feet high.  You can also make maps out of the leaves.  Lauhala means the leaf of the tree.  The female trees are very soft.  They were used as pipes to get water from one taro patch to another.  The male trees are known to be hard and beautiful.  Its found along the seashore, extending to the far up cliffs that over looks the ocean.

This place (Kea`au) is also known for the Ohia lehua.  The white and pink lehua is really rare.  The ones that you see are not rare.  They are the red and yellow flowers.  The lehua are Hawaiian plants that is extremely variable.  Young leaves of this plant is reddish or chartreuse or pink.  Old leaves are dull or shiny green.  Lehua is the flower.  Ohia are killed in a short time.  The lehua with the fruit is a relative to the Ohia Lehua.  I hope I gave you some good information.

Love your daughter,

Kiani
