INSTRUCTIONS FOR MAP BUILDING
THIS PROJECT INVOLVES PARENT PARTICIPATION! MAHALO!
The
preparation of the board has already been done in school. The assignment is to use the celluclay
(the gray substance in the Ziploc bag) to fill in your island.
1.
Start constructing
at the mountain peaks (the ‘X’ marks this point) and continuing
along the right (marked by ‘x’). The celluclay provided should be more than enough for the
construction of the island.
2.
Build
all 5 mountains/volcanoes and rifts before moving toward the edges of the
island. It’ll be easier to
fill in the white spaces once the mountains/volcanoes are constructed.
3.
When
this is done and you are ready to cover the outline of the island, use your
paper clip (unwind one end to make a pointer) and slowly push and poke the clay
so it is right on the pencil line.
4.
Keep
in mind that the thickest parts will be at the mountain peaks and rifts. The rest of the island needs to be
covered with a thin layer of the celluclay.
5.
Due to
the fact that the island will probably take about 2-3 days to dry, maybe even
four with the weather we’ve been having, I suggest that once the map is
constructed, you place it in the trunk of your car for faster drying.
6.
Below
you will find a sketch showing what the topview as well as the side view should
look like.
7.
Again,
you should have more than enough celluclay to construct your whole map. However, if for some reason you run out
of celluclay, jet let you map dry.
When you come to school on Wednesday, November 14, 2001, I will help you
continue where you left off. Also,
on Wednesday we will prepare our board for its painting stage.
8.
Have a
great 4-day weekend and have fun building your very own relief map of the Big
Island!
