Conclusion

Today land is still very much valued in Vanuatu although traditional relationships with the land are changing due to altered rural demographics (much out-migration to the towns). In the urban centers this is producing people who are alienated from the land and the traditions and cultural values and practices that relate to the land. This alienation is resulting in a new modernized ni-Vanuatu, whose life is in the town, which has its own issues (i.e. unemployment, crime, unwanted pregnancies, widening gap between the educated and less educated).
