Relocation Center Sites
Executive Order 9066 authorized the military to designate the western half of Washington, Oregon, California, and the southern part of Arizona as military areas from which civilians could to be told to leave. Nothing in the language of the order referred to people of Japanese ancestry, but everyone knew who was to be targeted. And sure enough, soon after President Roosevelt issued the executive order; instructions were posted, telling the people of Japanese ancestry to leave their homes.
The army took charge of the removal process, placing about120,000 people (citizens and non-citizens) in 15 hurriedly created Assembly Centers. People remained in these centers about 6 months. They were then transferred to camps called Relocation Centers, which were controlled by the War Relocation Authority (WRA).
The WRA created 10 Relocation Centers. In addition to the 10 centers there were many other camps in which people of Japanese ancestry lived in during this period of internment.
