The Hawaii Geographic Alliance (HGA) is part of a national network of Alliances organized to revitalize the teaching and learning of geography. The annual Alliance Summer Geography Institute (ASGI) is one of HGA's many programs organized for Hawaii's teachers.
HGA is supported by: National Geographic Society; Hawaii State Department of Education; and the University of Hawaii Manoa, College of Social Sciences, Department of Geography

WHAT IS ASGI? The institute is the beginning of a training and professional development cycle for teachers. This year the sessions will be held on Saturdays with a four-day segment at the end. Should you decide to apply and are accepted, you will:

• Earn 3 UH CCECS credits
• Receive assistance with developing lesson plans
• Become an HGA teacher consultant for geographic education
• Receive additional training in geography
• Become eligible to apply for national conferences/workshops
• Be part of National Geographic Society's network and receive resource materials
• Receive support from HGA such as having access to resource materials

WHO CAN APPLY FOR THE INSTITUTE?
Full-time classroom teachers, resource teachers and curriculum coordinators who are enthusiastic about learning geography and adding knowledge of the world.

WHAT DO I DO AT THE INSTITUTE?

• Receive professional development training from professors, area experts, and colleagues. (includes lectures, teaching strategies, field studies, in-service lessons from fellow participants)
• Attend and participate in all classes, field studies, evening activities (See Tentative Schedule)
• fulfill coursework;
• complete assignments,
• develop a lesson to teach content,
• present a 40-minute lesson during a small, simulated in-service workshop.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS ARE:

• Conduct at least 2 (45-60 minutes each) geography workshops in your school/district during 1998-99 academic year
• Cost (Partial) for Materials: $100, payable on Feb. 7, 1998.
• For CCECS credits: $50.00 payable on Feb. 7, 1998.

ACCOMODATIONS AND AIRFARE FOR NEIGHBOR ISLAND TEACHERS (limited numbers):
Accommodations for Neighbor Island Teachers will be available for
June 29 & 30 and July 1
Airfare: coupons will be provided for neighbor island teachers

HOW DO I APPLY? Follow the procedures on the Application Form and submit your completed application form, resume, and two letters of recommendation to Hawaii Geographic Alliance, as soon as possible. Deadline: January 9, 1998.
