Water Front District 1
Aloha Tower Marketplace (1994). This marketplace replaced a series of pier sheds to revitalize the Honolulu waterfront. Over 100 shops and restaurants can be found in this open-air shopping complex developed by James Rouse (has done similar projects in Boston, Baltimore, and Norfolk). A 268 foot-long mural depicting a sanitized version of the "boat days" of years past can be found in the terminal building.
Aloha Tower (1926). Between 1926 and the 1950s, most tourists were greeted by Aloha Tower, one of the enduring landmarks in Honolulu. This ten-story structure is 184 feet high and was the tallest structure in Honolulu when built. During World War II it functioned as a command and control center where military convoys were planned (green and khaki camouflage paint). Today, it houses the harbormaster's traffic control center.
