Purpose:

Hawaii as an island has a very limited amount of natural resources. How did Hawaii in the past survive in terms of a sustainable economy? What types of industries did Hawaii have before tourism became the driving force behind our economy? Also, with tourism numbers on the decline, what are we going to do in the future to ensure that Hawaii will continue to be a place where the quality of life is high? The purpose of the lesson is to have the students look at different industries which affected Hawaii's economy in the past. The students will then propose an industry which they feel can help Hawaii to improve its economy i the future.
