9 - 11 Grade
May 1999
Purpose:
Hawaii as an island has a very limited amount of natural
resources. How did Hawaii in the past survive in terms of a sustainable
economy? What types of industries did Hawaii have before tourism became
the driving force behind our economy? Also, with tourism numbers on the
decline, what are we going to do in the future to ensure that Hawaii will
continue to be a place where the quality of life is high? The purpose of
the lesson is to have the students look at different industries which affected
Hawaii's economy in the past. The students will then propose an industry
which they feel can help Hawaii to improve its economy i the future.
Objective:
- Students will be able to identify various industries
in Hawaii and where those products/services are exported to.
- Students will create a timeline which highlights important
dates and events of those different industries
- Students will identify on a map places where Hawaii exported
their goods to in the past
Hawaii Content Performance Standards:
- Demonstrate an understanding of the impact of travel
and tourism in Hawaii.
- Describe the role that supply and demand, prices, incentives,
and profits play in determining what is produced in shaping Hawaii's economic
development.
Geographic Standards:
- #11 - Human Systems - The patterns and networks of
economic interdependence on earth's surface
How places of various size function as centers of economic activity
- #17 - How to apply Geography to interpret the past
How geographic contexts have influenced events and conditions in the past
Geographic Skills:
Identify locations and acquire information from maps
Ability to prepare maps and make an oral presentation
Ability to make inferences on information presented on maps
Geographic Themes:
Relationships Within Places: Humans & Environments
- Distribution of resources varies from place to place
Movement: Humans Interacting on Earth
Lesson Can Be Used With a Unit On:
- Looking at the role supply and demand plays in determining
what to produce
- Looking at different cultures and how they came and affected
Hawaii's economy and ethnic backgrounds
Materials Needed:
History of Hawaii Text
Chart Paper
Colored Markers
Maps of the World
Atlases
Access to Internet and other sources to find information about different
industries
Procedure:
- Introduce the lesson by having the students write down
their opinions on the following 2 topics: What Hawaii's most productive
industries were in the past and present; What they feel could be an industry
Hawaii could look into as a new way of diversifying our economy.
- Have a general discussion about what they wrote.
- In the discussion, hint to students that it is important
to look in the past and use what we know to help improve the future.
- Pass out assignment and go over with the students what
they need to accomplish.
- Students will look at various industries which affected
Hawaii's economy in the past, and where Hawaii exported those products
to.
- Students will create a timeline highlighting important
dates and events. They will also use an atlas to show on a map where Hawaii
exported those products to. (This also shows them where Hawaii is in terms
of being the bridge between Asia and the Americas)
- Give students time to work on their assignments.
The Future of Hawaii's Economy (assignment) & Economy Proposal Timeline
Assessment Strategies:
- Use the timelines to see if all group members contributed
(each group member took 1 or 2 industries)
- Have students explain why those dates and events were
important
- Have students go more in-depth, and maybe even add more
dates and events which they felt were important
Evaluation:
- Check to see if all dates and events are on the timeline
- After producing map, students can be quizzed on locations
of different places which affected Hawaii in the past
Extensions:
One assignment which can be used in the same format is
having students look at the different ethnicities that immigrated to Hawaii
during the plantation days, and have them do the same sort of assignment
except instead of industries, look at the people who came to Hawaii.
