The Future of Hawaii's Economy
Your final "BIG" grade in this class besides the final exam will
be a proposal which you and your group (Maximum of 3 people!)
make about an industry that your group feels can help to improve Hawaii's
economy. In earlier times, Hawaii was reliant on a number of different industries,
but for the past couple of decades, tourism has been the driving force behind
Hawaii's economic situation. With other places marketing themselves as "Paradise"
destinations for cheaper prices, can Hawaii survive with tourism as the
backbone of our economy? As leaders of Hawaii's future, are we truly using
all of the resources available to us in helping to sustain Hawaii's economy?
Your group will first take a look at various industries that Hawaii had in the past which were fairly successful. As time went on though, things changed and these industries were no longer viable options to keep Hawaii's economy going strong. Your group will then propose an industry which the group feels Hawaii can get into and succeed in the future. Your group must research this industry and show how and why it will be successful and helpful to the people of Hawaii socially and economically. Your group may want to look at the chosen industry and see how it helped other countries or places similar to Hawaii. Consideration must also be given to resources available to Hawaii. Although different groups may choose different industries, the common theme every group will have is that tourism can no longer be the sole industry we rely on. Your group needs to try and convince an audience that Hawaii needs to diversify its economy in order to succeed in the future. Your group will then present their proposal to the class during the last week of school. You will need to come up with visuals and charts comparing the future of the tourist industry to your proposed industry and why your proposed industry will be better for Hawaii.
Here's a brief schedule showing what we will be doing for the next week
- Research the main industries of Hawaii from the 1800s to the present using the History of Hawaii text. Create a timeline of those industries including key people and events. Also, show on a map where the products were exported to.
- Complete timelines and maps. Prepare for the library by deciding which industry your group will research. You also need to research the tourist industry.
- Library research
Economy Proposal Timeline
As part of your assignment for your proposal, your group will need to do
a timeline of all of Hawaii's past industries (whaling, pineapple, sugar
cane, tourism). The notes you took last week may come in handy here. Important
events that happened within each industry must be included on the timeline.
You need to write a description of the event as well as the date of the
event on your timeline. This timeline needs to be turned in along with your
proposal when you read and present your proposal next week.
