About the Hawai’i Geographic Alliance

The Hawai’i Geographic Alliance (HGA) is a grass-roots organization of educators and citizens concerned with excellence in geographic education. HGA is one of 50 such alliances in a national network. These alliances enable teachers in every U.S. state, Canada, and Puerto Rico to benefit from shared ideas and experiences. HGA's mission is to promote geographic instruction, actively foster standards-based geographic learning in the K-12 classrooms, and help students prepare to be productive and responsible citizens in a global economy.

Since 1989, the Hawai’i Geographic Alliance (HGA) has been building a network of teachers, academics, and community members interested in increasing geographic literacy in our state.  HGA is sponsored by the Department of Geography, College of Social Sciences, University of Hawaii Manoa and funded through HGA endowment funds and other grants from the National Geographic Society.

Services

For Teachers/Pre-Service Students, HGA...

• Offers workshops and courses on various geographic topics
• Provides ways to better understand geography and the National Geography Standards
• Provides educational resources and materials
• Involves schools in an annual nationwide Geography Awareness Week Program which is part of Geography Action! initiative
• Assists with State Geographic Bee (Grades 4-8)

For Students, Parents, and the Community, HGA...

• Supports Family Geography Challenge- "a family-oriented activity that gets parents and kids involved at home in discovering more about the world. It encourages parents to harness the power of television-or other news media-to help their children learn about geography and the world."
• Organizes family-oriented Geo Activities in the community
