Asia: Continent of Contrast!

GAW 2007 Workshop

The Hawaii Geographic Alliance and the National Geographic Society invite you to join us in celebrating Geography Awareness Week.


GEOGRAPHY STANDARDS:

Hawaii's geography standard is: Standards 7: Geography: World in Spatial Terms -Use geographic representations to organize, analyze, and present information on people, places, and environments and understand the nature and interaction of geographic regions and societies around the world.

I. INTRODUCE THE THEME (Monday) "Asia:  Continent of Contrast"

     a.  Learn and sing songs written and composed by Benny Uyetake, teacher at Kalama Middle School. 

     b.  Map and study the regions of Asia using a variety of resources.  Students can map the countries by region.  Background information can also be found on the following websites.

II. READ AND WRITE ABOUT ASIA (Tuesday) 

     a.  Read and write about Asia (i.e. news article, literature book, current events, etc.)

     b.  Suggested Ideas:

          -Compare and contrast current events to Hawaii.

           -Read informational text about the different cultures of Asia.  Compare and contrast cultures, or write a reflection of what was read.

          -Write about a country (poetry, essay, photo essay, etc.)  You may use "The Important Book" as a model for writing a poem about the country.

Lesson: The Beauty of Vietnam

          -Read what's happening in Asia.  Research to find possible answers to your questions.

III. FINE ARTS DAY (Wednesday)

    a.  Create art products from different countries (i.e., mosaics, calligraphy, shadow puppets, kites, batiks)

     b.  Compare and contrast different architectural designs from different countries (i.e., Taj Mahal, Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem, Grand Mosque, Angkor Wat, Shinto shrines)

     c.  Listen to music http://worldmusic.nationalgeographic.com/worldmusic/view/page.basic/home

from different parts of Asia.  What generalizations can you make about the music?  Discuss, compare and contrast the type of instruments used. 

IV. POSTCARD CONTEST (Thursday)

     a.  Participate in HGA Annual GAW Postcard Contest.  Postcards must be postmarked by December 7, 2007

V. CELEBRATE ASIA (Friday)

a. Encourage your students to wear a T-shirt that relates to the theme of Asia. Have the students explain why they selected that particular T-shirt and how it relates to the GAW theme. For a lesson, go to http://www.hawaii.edu/hga/GAW97/tshirt.html                                              

b.  Share something that has to do with Asia (i.e., games, food, artifacts, clothing, sports) c.  Share  products from Fine Arts Day (Wednesday).


VI. OTHER ACTIVITIES 

     a.  GIS - Explore Geographic Information Systems (GIS). What do the GIS users do with the data they collect?   Check to see who is using GIS near your school. The GIS users are everywhere. You will find them in private businesses, federal, state, and city agencies, or in many non-profit organizations.

     b.  Visit art museums to explore the Asian culture.

            As an extension students can create additional questions and exchange these with classmates. 

     c.  SPEAKERS
 Invite speakers to share about their experiences living in Asia.

d.  ARTICLES  Collect articles on Asia from the daily newspapers and/or magazines. Discuss.

     e.  CHILDREN'S LITERATURE

f.  GAW SONGS - Includes GAW songs from 1996.

An online site with geography games to help students learn about places. Choose Asia and find out how many countries you are familiar with.

h.  GAW REPORT
