Creating the Base Map Build your Geography
Action! Europe Map by using the projector map or tile map found in the ÒMapping EuropeÓ Toolkit. (It is downloadable from
NGS)
The lessons in the ÒMapping EuropeÓ Toolkit
take you and your students through several layers of mapping. Students will become familiar with the
countries in Europe.
Activities for the different grade level
clusters can be found in the ÒMapping EuropeÓ Toolkit.
K-1: Language of Location
2-3: EuropeÕs Symbols, Lines and Directions
4-5: Mapping Mammals and Protected Areas
6-8: Tourism Across Europe
9-12: Powerful Causes and Effects
Observations Through the Use of
Photographs, Postcards, Drawings, and Other Media
Making
observations is one of the geographerÕs tools. Use your observation skills in this activity. Throughout the activity,
students might generate questions about the physical and cultural
characteristics of the various countries in Europe. For example, What are the
physical features in Europe? What
are the human activities going on in Europe? Where are the major cities and why are they there? How do the countries compare in
population? How do
people make a living? What are
some of the environmental issues?
What languages are spoken?
Are borders a problem? Why
or why not? Where are the
agricultural regions and why are they there?
Observe through use of
photographs, postcards, drawings, music, and text (books, articles, short
stories) (in small groups) Using
postcards and/or pictures is a visual way to give students images of the
various countries in Europe. You
might also want to use the postcards/pictures to discuss the physical and human
characteristics of Europe. Sample postcard (zip file)
Get to the Beat with Mapping and Europe.
Learn and sing songs written and composed by
Benny Uyetake, teacher at Kalama Middle School.
Suggested Ideas:
- Compare and contrast current events to Hawaii.
- Read informational text about the different cultures in Europe. Compare and contrast cultures, or write a reflection of what was read.
- Read whatÕs happening in Europe. Research to find possible answers to your questions. Write about Europe (poetry, essay, photo essay, etc.) You may use ÒThe Important BookÓ as a model for writing a poem about Europe or a specific country in Europe. Or, share various ABC books (example: A to Z of Russia). Students can use their research information to create their own ABC book.
