GETTING TO KNOW EUROPE

Observations Through the Use of Photographs, Postcards, Drawings, and Other Media

Making observations is one of the geographerÕs tools.  Use your observation skills in this activity.   Throughout the activity, students might generate questions about the physical and cultural characteristics of the various countries in Europe.  For example, What are the physical features in Europe?  What are the human activities going on in Europe?  Where are the major cities and why are they there?  How do the countries compare in population?    How do people make a living?  What are some of the environmental issues?  What languages are spoken?  Are borders a problem?  Why or why not?  Where are the agricultural regions and why are they there?

Observe through use of photographs, postcards, drawings, music, and text (books, articles, short stories) (in small groups)  Using postcards and/or pictures is a visual way to give students images of the various countries in Europe.  You might also want to use the postcards/pictures to discuss the physical and human characteristics of Europe.
