POSTCARD CONTEST
"EXPLORE THE WORLD! GEOGRAPHY TAKES YOU PLACES"
Hawaii Geography Alliance
PRIZES
Winners (one winner per category) will receive: a world map, a beach ball globe, and a "world map" cap. Other prizes include the following:
- Grade K/1
- 3-D Action Books: Lion Cubs and Their World; At the Zoo
- Grade 2/3
- 3-D Action Books: Undersea Treasures; Creepy Crawly Creatures
- Grade4/5
- National Geographic Society How We Crossed the West.
The Adventures of Lewis and Clark (book)
- Grade 6-8
- National Geographic Society Picture Atlas of Our World
- Grade 9-12
- Easy-to-read encyclopedia: Exploring Your World
(All prizes, except for "world map" cap, are National Geographic Society products.)
The winning postcards will be printed in the Hawaii Geographic Alliance newsletter in Spring 1998 and posted on the HGA Website.
All entries become property of HGA.
POSTCARD SHOULD:
- Include an illustration that represents a place in the world you would like to explore. The illustration should be done in color (using felt pens, crayons, etc.) on the top half of 8 1/2" x 11" white paper.
Suggestion: Select a place new to you. No computer art allowed.
(Note to K-1 teachers: Students may use the entire 8 1/2" x 11" paper for the picture. Attach a separate sheet with the explanation and student information as listed in part "c" of Format Directions for Postcard.)
- Include a short response to the following geographic questions (25-50 words) :
a) Where is this place?
b) Why would you like to explore this place. (Note to K-1 teachers: Dictation for explanation will be accepted...minimum of 10 words.)
POSTCARD FORMAT
- a. Divide 8 1/2" x 11" white paper (eg. xerox type) in half, crosswise
- b. Draw picture on top half and write explanation on bottom half
- c. Write name, school, school's address, grade, and teacher's name on the bottom 8-1/2"

Postcards will be judged in five categories:
- Grades K-1
- Grades 2-3
- Grades 4-5
- Grades 6-8
- Grades 9-12

One postcard per category will be selected. (Contest for Hawaii residents only.)
In a clasped envelope (Do Not Fold), send entries postmarked no later than December 3, 1997 to:
