SUMMARY: Students will wear place/name t-shirts and plot the
location on a world map as well as in a passport. Data will be collected
for distances "traveled," and locations visited.
OBJECTIVES:
- Students will locate their t-shirt place/name on maps
- Students will share facts/artifacts (souvenirs) from their
place/name location orally with whole class.
- Students will measure distance from home to the respective
locations.
- Students will calculate total distance traveled within the
specified time period.
- Students will create a database using information gathered from
the whole class.
GEOGRAPHY STANDARDS:
- Standard 1: How to use maps and other geographic representations,
tools, and technologies to acquire, process and report information from a
spatial perspective.
- Standard 4: The physical and human characteristics of places.
GRADE LEVEL: Adaptable for Grades K-12
MATERIALS NEEDED:
- Teacher developed "passports"
- Camera/Film for "passport" pictures
- World Map/United States Map
- 1/4" colored stickers
- Rubber Stamps/Stickers
- Resources: Books, Atlas
TIME REQUIRED: Approximately 30 minutes per day for at least 5 days.
PRE-ACTIVITY:
- Prior to the start of the activity, take close up photographs of
each students in front of the world map. These pictures will be glued to
their "passport."
- Make a passport for each child. Passports can be designed using
PRINT SHOP or other word processing programs. Current, Inc. also has
preprinted student passports.
GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS (adaptable for each grade and ability level):
Students will "travel" by wearing place/name t-shirts to various
locations in the world. (For example, student wearing a "Disney World"
t-shirt will have traveled to Orlando, Florida). Students should be
encouraged to wear a place/name t-shirt every day for the duration of the
activity. (Students should not be given credit for "visiting" the same
location more than once.)
Teacher will stamp in the student's passport each time the student
wears a different place/name t-shirt, noting the location on the passport.
Student will then place a small sticker on the location on the
appropriate map and compute the miles from home to the location. Student
will also share about his/her location (how did he/she get the t-shirt,
souvenirs, impressions of the location)
Students can then graph all data collected either by computer
spreadsheet or manually.
- Number of miles traveled from home to location
- Number of students visiting location
- Total number of miles traveled for student/class
Incentives can be given to student who has "traveled" the
farthest, the most miles, the most places, etc.
ASSESSMENTS:
