No. ____98-154____
RECOGNIZING GEOGRAPHY AWARENESS WEEK
WHEREAS, the National Geographic Society has designated the week of November 15 to 21, 1998, as Geography Awareness Week with its theme being "People, Places, and Patterns: Geography Puts the Pieces Together"; and
WHEREAS, 11 years ago, Gilbert H. Grosvenor, then President and Chief Executive Officer of the National Geographic Society, sought a way to reach students, educators and the public in establishing Geographic Alliances throughout our country; and
WHEREAS, during Geography Awareness Week, hundreds of thousands of students and teachers across the country, including Hawaii, will take part in activities relating to geography in preparation for students to compete in a global society; and
WHEREAS, geography education has changed, making it much more than locating places on a map or memorizing state capitals; and
WHEREAS, the National Geographic Standards are designed to help students see meaning in the arrangement of things in a spatial context; to see relationships between people, places and environments; to use geographic skills; and to apply those skills in life situations; and
WHEREAS, the people of the County of Maui are encouraged to observe Geography Awareness Week through appropriate programs, ceremonies, and activities; now, therefore,
