Geography Awareness Week 1999 Postcard Contest


PRIZES: Winners (one winner per category) will receive:

K-1Giant Atlas of Geography
2-3NGS World Atlas for Young Explorers
4-5NGS World Atlas for Young Explorers
6-8Atlas of Hawaii, Third Edition
9-12Atlas of Hawaii, Third Edition

All entries become property of HGA. The winning postcards will be placed on the HGA website.


POSTCARD SHOULD:

  1. Include an illustration that represents how you are connected to the rest of the world. The illustration should be done in color (using felt pens, crayons, etc.) on the top half of 8 1/2" x 11" white paper. No computer art allowed.
    (Note to K-1 teachers: Students may use the entire 8 1/2" x 11" paper for the picture. Attach a separate sheet with the explanation and student information as listed in part "c" of Format Directions for Postcard.)
  2. Include a short descriptiion to your illustration using the geographic questions as a guide. (25-50 words) :
    • How are you connected to the rest of the world?
    • How did people communicate over distance in the days before electronic communication?
    • What technologies help us to connect to the world?
    • How have present technologies affected the way we communicate with others?
    • How have these technological improvements affected the concept of distance?

    (Note to K-1 teachers: Dictation for explanation will be accepted...minimum of 10 words.)

POSTCARD FORMAT:

  1. Divide 8 1/2" x 11" white paper (eg. xerox type) in half, crosswise
  2. Draw picture on top half and type (or write legibly) explanation on bottom half
  3. Write name, school, school's address, grade, and teacher's name on the bottom

ATTENTION TEACHERS:

Postcards will be judged in five categories: One postcard from each category will be selected. Contest for Hawaii residents only.

Grades K-1
Grades 2-3
Grades 4-5
Grades 6 -8
Grades 9 - 12


In a clasped envelope (Do Not Fold), send entries postmarked no later than December 4, 1999 to:
