Ideas to consider as you walk the "community" of Kailua Town
(excerpt from a page in the booklet)
4. Read CLUE #1. Do you know which business it is referring to? Be sure to stop in at this business as you walk around to get your souvenir and your next clue!! You can collect clues at anytime during your mapping excursion.
5. Now, take a quick stroll through the Town Center up and down Kailua Road. As you do so, think about which direction you are walking- North, South, East, West, mauka, makai, Ewa, or Diamond Head? Not sure? Check your compass! Also, as you walk, answer the following questions:
a. What types of businesses are along Kailua Road?
b. What amenities and services are offered? (trash cans, telephones, benches, etc.)
c. What are the entrances to the businesses like? (e.g. glass double doors) What purpose does the entrance have? Or what kind of feel does the entrance have?
d. Is there a theme to the area or to each large building? What are the themes? Take pictures to help you illustrate your description.
e. Can you categorize the different stores? Look for patterns in the stores and amenities that are available.
f. What landmarks are there? Do they fit the themes you identified above? What is the purpose of each landmark you see?
g. Who do you see? Anyone you know? Are there many tourists around? Can you determine who is a tourist and who is local? How?
6. Now, think about what you found most interesting about what you saw and the answers you gave. Did you think of other questions that you want to discover the answers to?
Decide: * What MESSAGE you would like to convey to others through your map
