CHILDREN'S BOOKS
- Coste, Marion. Nene. A Kolowalu Book, University of Hawaii Press. 1993. Book provides information on the Nene (Hawaii state bird), first in story form, followed by information about the Nene.
- Howell, Dean. The Story of Chinaman's hat. Island Heritage Publishing. 1990. Chinaman's Hat is a small island off the east coast of Oahu, Hawaii. It is frequently photographed because of its resemblance to a Chinese straw hat. This story is an original legend describing how this uniquely shaped island was created.
- Matsumoto, Lisa. Beyond `Ohi`a Valley, Adventures in a Hawaiian Rainforest. Lehua, Inc. 1996. This story is about Kahuli who is an adventurous hawaiian tree snail. He is swept away into a destroyed valley where he struggles to save his life from the predators of the rainforest.
- Nunes, Susan. To Find the Way. UH Press, 1992. Story describes the human side of a historical accomplishment - the voyage from Tahiti to Hawaii by ancient Polynesians.
- Orr, Katherine. Discover Hawai`i's Freshwater Wildlife. Island Heritage. 1997. Contents include the water system, the animals in the streams, estuaries, wetlands, the waterbirds, people and freshwater, and what we can do to help for the future.
Other books written and illustrated by Katherine Orr are Discover Hawai`i's Marine Mammals and Discover Hawai`i's Birth by Fire Volcanoes. All three books are available from Island Heritage (808-487-7299).
