Salzburg City

Did you know?
Salzburg City is the capital of Salzburg Province. It is 470m above sea level and is located at Austrias midpoint (lengthwise). Salzburg is near the German border. It has 150,000 inhabitants and its most famous son is Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Mozart was born here in 1756 and you can visit the house he was born in, the house he lived in or the Mozart Monument. Mozart chocolate balls (Mozartkugeln) can also be purchased. The Salzach river flows through this city which was also made famous by the movie The Sound of Music.

The patron saint of Salzburg is St. Rupert of Worms. In 696 AD he received the propriety Salzpurch as a gift from the Bavarian Duke Theodo. St. Rupert founded St. Peters Abbey. He also became the first Bishop of Salzburg. From 798 AD Salzburg was an independent state until 1803. It was part of Bavaria for a while then finally joined the state of Austria in 1816.

On top of Munchsberg, one of Salzburgs three hills, is the fortress Hohensalzburg. It is a distinctive feature in Salzburgs famous skyline and is one of Europes largest and best preserved castles. It was built between 1077 and 1681 by the ruling archbishops.

Additional Information:
Interesting places to visit while in Salzburg include: St. Peters cemetery and the Catacombs, St. Peters Abbey Church, the Franciscan Church, the Festival Halls, Mirabell Palace, and the Getreidegasse which is a street with many imaginative wrought-iron shop signs. This just names a few places. There are many more historical and cultural sights in Salzburg.

Bonus Question:
1. Where did Mozart eventually settle?
