Mapping Africa Handout
Directions:
Labeling the grid.
- Label the top parallel line 40 degree, the next one 35 degree and each consecutive line at 5 degree intervals until you reach 0 degree. This is the Equator. Continue labeling the parallel lines south of the Equator at 5 degree intervals until you reach your last line, which is 40 degree S.
- Label the far left meridian at 20 degree, the next one at 15 degree, and each consecutive line at 5 degree intervals until you reach 0 degree. This is the Prime Meridian. Continue labeling the meridians east of the Prime Meridian at 5 degree intervals until you reach your last line, which is 55 degree E.
- Label the Equator and Prime Meridian.
This is your map grid.
Use the list of coordinates to create your map.
Notice that parallels (lines of latitude) are given first in all cases.
Place a dot at the coordinate, where the parallel (latitude) lines and meridian (longitude) lines meet.
Connect the dots with a line as you locate each coordinate.
