a man-made channel of water joining lakes or rivers, or connecting them with the sea (canal)

a fairly large piece of land extending into a body of water...small _____ are often called points or spits (cape)

a very steep or vertical slope (cliff)

the gently sloping margins of a continent submerged beneath the sea (continental shelf)

a circular-shaped hollow at the top of a volcano or on the surface of the land (crater)

a barren land area containing little or no vegetation (desert)

a large mass of slowly moving ice (glacier)

an area of water where ships, boats, and other watercraft can anchor or dock...deep sheltered bay (harbor)

a shallow body of water separated from the ocean by reefs or low strips of land (lagoon)

a desert area made fertile by the presence of water (oasis)

a piece of land almost completely surrounded by water (peninsula)

a submerged or partially submerged deposit of sand or sediment (bar)

a deep, steep-sided narrow valley...small versions of these are chasms, gorges, or ravines (canyons)

a narrow passage of water connecting two larger bodies of water (channel)

a large, flat or level area of land (plain)

an ocean reef made up of coral, and other organisms (coral reef)

the area of sediments formed at the mouth of a river (delta)

a long, narrow inlet or arm of the ocean bordered by high cliffs (fjord)

a large mass of land ice floating in the sea (iceberg)

a piece of land completely surrounded by water (island)

a low, water-soaked, poorly drained area with thick tall grasses and reeds (marsh)

a passage through or over a mountainous or hilly region (pass)

an elevated, mostly level area of land (plateau)

an area of fast-flowing water in a stream where the stream bed is steeper than normal (rapids)

an arm of the sea, or ocean, forming a wide channel between an island and the mainland; the ocean inlet is roughly parallel to the coast (sound)

a long, narrow hollow in the Earth's surface lying between two higher areas (valley)

a small area of sea or lake partly enclosed by dry land (bay)

an isolated, rocky hill or mountain with a small flat top (butte)

long mountain rigdelines that determine the directions a continent's rivers will flow (continental divide)

a mound or ridge of loose sand shaped by blowing winds (dune)

a forest in the cold, high latitude, with coniferous needle-leaves (taiga or boreal)

a hot geothermal spring that shotts scalding water and steam high into the air (geyser)

the vast grasslands in South America, especially Argentina (pampas)

open country in South Africa with few trees (veld or veldt [velt])

a narrow body of water connecting two larger bodies or water (strait)

a long, narrow, steep-sided depression in the sea floor (trench)

an opening in the Earth from which hot gases, smoke and molten lava are emitted (volcano)

an isolated, rocky hill or mountain with a large flat top (mesa)

a high, overhanging edge of a cliff (precipice)

the steep downward slope from the edge of the continental shelf to the deep ocean floor (continental slope)

a forest located in equatorial zones with unvarying warm temperatures, high humidity, and almost daily rainfall (tropical rain)

a mid latitude forest where there is full cycle of seasons and ample rain throughout the year (deciduous)

tropical grasslands (savannas)

a large area of grasslands in the U.S. (prairies)

vast treeless plains in SE Europe and in Asia (steppe)

a large inlet of ocean or sea that is partially surrounded by land (gulf)

openings in the earth where underground water flows to the surface (springs)

a very small, low, offshore island or reef built from coral and sand (key)

a marsh filled with stagnant water and dead, decaying plants mostly found in northern climates (bog)

a long connected chain of mountains and hills (mountain range)

a massive mountain range lying in the bottom of an ocean or sea (ocean ridge)

streams and rivers flowing into a larger river (tributaries)

a marsh with trees...contain more water and deeper water than marshes (swamp)

found on mountain slopes at altitudes where trees cannot grow (alpine tundras)

a small, splashing waterfall that tumbles down a mountainside in a series of steps (cascade)

the line connecting the places where streams emerge from the uplands onto lowlands; usually marked by waterfalls or rapids (fall line)

the highest part of a mountain (peak)

the area where a river originates (source or headwater)

a narrow strip of land that connects two larger areas of land and narrowly separates two large bodies of water (isthmus)

a large inland body of water larger than pondes (lake)

a bend in the winding, looping course of many lowland rivers (meander)

the place where a stream flows into a larger body of water (mouth)

a high prominent point on a rocky coastline ideal site for lighthouses (pomontory)

region drained by a great river and all its tributaries (drainage basin/watershed)

a huge treeless plain bordering the Arctic Ocean (tundra)

a large dramatice waterfall that plunges down from a high, overhanging precipice (cataract)
