The Urban Hierarchy
Hamlet: has a population of less than 500 people and only
a crossroads store.
Village: has between 500 and 2500 people and specializes in one economic activity
Town: has between 2500 and 20,000 people and is often a government center and has a number of specialized activities
City: has between 20,000 and one million people. These communities are regional government and trade centers
Primate City: a city twice as large as any other city in its country and is the center of government, trade, and culture.

A Hamlet is any place with less than 500 people and a good or service is provided for them. Many times a hamlet is nothing more than a crossroads store and one or two homes near the store. Togo, a small crossroads community 35 miles north of Nashwauk, Minnesota, is an example of just such a community.
