Tours of Coconut Island are provided by the volunteer guides of the Community Education Program (CEP) and by the staff of the Hawai‘i Institute of Marine Biology (HIMB).
Tour Cost: A suggested donation of $1 - $2 per participant is strongly encouraged, and donations of any amount will be warmly accepted in support of our on-going education activities. Checks can be made payable to: UH Foundation – HIMB CEP
Because it is an island without a bridge to the land, you must take a boat to visit Coconut Island. We offer two services: a small shuttle and a larger transport vessel, the Honu Kai. Honu Kai will be required to transport 10 or more children.
A Boston Whaler, a 17-foot open outboard, is operated by HIMB on demand during regular work hours. This shuttle will take you from the
Lilipuna Road pier to the island and back whenever you need it. On weekends and holidays the shuttle is
run by volunteer graduate students, but only on the hour.
The shuttle can accommodate a maximum of 6 (six) passengers at a time, so it is recommended for small groups (under 20 people).
By law children under age 13 must wear life jackets, which are available from the boat captain.
Shuttle Cost: There is no cost for this service.
HIMB operates a 40-foot landing craft with a covered aft area for the convenience of groups desiring to cross to Coconut Island. It can take groups from
the Lilipuna Road pier , or by special arrangement, from the He‘eia Landing pier. The Honu Kai can accommodate a maximum of 40 passengers.
Groups of 20 and above, and any group with ten (10) or more children, must use the Honu Kai for transport on and off the island.
By law children under age 13 must wear life jackets, which are available from the boat captain.
Honu Kai Cost: $60/hr roundtrip from Lilipuna pier or $75/hr roundtrip from He'eia pier. If you use the Honu Kai, you can pay by cash or a check made out to “RCUH Project 001286”.
